DYI(Do It Yourself) Projects

Good morning friends!
Today I am going to show some simple but fun DYI(Do It Yourself) projects that my sisters & I have created recently, as well as in the last couple of years. If you know my sisters & I, you know that we are always trying to repurpose things and get as much value out of it as we can. I shop around at thrift stores, garage sales and I am not afraid to admit that one of my favorite times of the year is a time called Burming(basically a time when everyone puts there junk or whatever they no longer want on the curb). People from all over bring trailers and everything to pick stuff up, it is quite hilarious some of the things you see. A lot of stuff on the curb are complete junk although others are amazing finds that just need a little fixing up. Here are some examples:

The first one is a few crates my sister Brittni & I found when burming a couple years ago.. I made it into a little coffee/tea bar out of them:

The next is if you buy a couple silver platters(normally under $5) at a thrift store you can paint the middle of it with chalk board paint and it makes a great, simple, yet elegant sign.

The next one was an old ladder. I turned it into a bookcase when I lived in my last apartment. I now have hung a few mexican blankets on this ladder in my living room.

The next one was just taking a older bookshelf, I repainted it to add a little extra color in my place.

One of my favorite DYI projects, was one that my sister Brittni & I did together. We took an old book from the thrift store with neat pictures in it, a table, four chairs, some paint & enjoyed making them all come together into a fun set of table and chairs. We basically decoupaged the old book onto the seats of the chairs and the table top. Decoupage basically is taking a form or glue that you can find at any craft store and you just take a paint brush or your fingers and spread it over paper or whatever you want to cover the item you wish to decoupage. You can also use Elmer's glue and a little water to make your own decoupage glue, although you have to repeat this a few more times than using the decoupage glue from a craft store. Here are some pictures of the finished items:

We used a plum colored paint for the chairs.

A pretty sage colored paint is what we used for the table.

This was something my sister Brittni created for me, very easy and fun. It is a blank piece of wood, decoupaged and she than added three fun knobs. I love the uniqueness, design & simplicity of it. Thanks Britt!

Another little thing that I fixed up was a couple of drawers, which I am easily able to slide under my bed and store things in. All I needed to do was paint the drawers and their handles.

Another Burm find was this shutter, it was an ugly grey before I painted it a cranberry red. I than hung it up on one of my bedroom walls, and put my earrings on it.

Here is a mirror I also found on the burm that was an ugly green and I painted it a nice black and it has served me great as a little decor piece.

This wonderful, vintage bench was a treasure that I was able to fix up and give away to a friend. It turned out beautiful!

A little garage sale find this last spring was this cute older trash can that I was able to paint black and make a little classier.

The last item that I am going to show you is a fun project that I just completed last week. It was a old window that I taped, painted, and put a map of the world behind. I am a huge traveler, I love to see new places no matter where they are.. this is a reminder of places I have been and how big the world is.

As you can see I am not all about making crafts or DYI projects hard, or complicated. Before you throw something out just because it doesn't have the pretty appearance it once had, try putting a fresh coat of paint on it, maybe paint it with chalkboard paint, or find a new useful way to use it… be creative! :)
